Our Afterschool Program is unique because each youth member is also a member of Schoharie County 4-H. Within the Afterschool program kids can participate in a variety of clubs, as well as trips and activities hosted by Schoharie County 4-H. They also become eligible to display some of their items at the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair in August!
During Art Club, Afterschool members are encouraged to use their imaginations to create! Often they will be working on projects that have particular uses such as bird feeders. Sometimes their projects are made for community service, like when Teresa Adell, 4-H Subject Educator in Otsego County, came and helped them make blankets for the local animal shelter. Members are also given free time to let their creativity go wild.
Afterschool members in Cobleskill-Richmondville may participate in Crochet Club, where experienced crocheter Elaine Davenport teaches them the basics. Some of our members have even had their projects displayed in the county and state fairs! For those who are not quite incluned to crochet, Elaine often helps with other yarn based crafts like plastic canvas needlework.
Our Science Club allows afterschool members to explore the world around them by performing experiments in a safe environment. Youth have built volcanoes, experimented with pumpkins, and made things that float and/or fly. We love to encourage the fun that comes with science!
At Cobleskill-Richmondville, Ryan Rickson loves to share his knowledge with members of the afterschool program. Ryan has a degree in reptiles and has worked with the DEC on the topic. Each member of the snake club does a research paper on a snake of their choosing. Since the members will be handling live non-venomous snakes, parental permission is required.
Members of the Schoharie afterschool program can take advantage of Valentina Conway's Spanish Club. Youth will learn common conversational words and phrases, how to count to twenty, and more. Past members have participated in educational activities such as labeling a coloring book in spanish. This club is for members of all ages and encourages them to have fun with foreign languages.
During sports club youth learn a variety of skills that provide them with fun exercise. Sports are often season-specific and include Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis, and Snowshoeing. Some football skills are also taught, though members are not allowed to participate in tackling. During school tennis practices, the tennis coach will often allow the member to come observe so they can see if they want to be on the school tennis team.
