In collaboration with the Schoharie County Home of Ongoing Learning (S.C.H.O.O.L), join Master Food Preserver Theresa Kaya for a demonstration on the proper and safe way to boiling water bath canning. The choice of recipe will be contingent on available produce,but may include pickles or jams. Review of safe canning procedures as well as available safe tested recipes will be included. Just because it's Grandma's recipe and we are still here to talk about it doesn't mean it's safe!Registration Instructions: Program is open to the public. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schoharie and Otsego County (CCESO) is hosting a fun-filled (and delicious) evening program at its new demonstration gardens at 123 Lake Street in Cooperstown on September 9, 2026, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Join Otsego Master Gardener Volunteers and learn about the Vegetable Varieties Garden Trials and participate in a Tomato Tasting event-The Tomato Palooza. The Master Gardeners will gather a variety of tomatoes from the Demonstration Garden, tomatoes from the Plant Sale, and tomatoes they’ve grown this season in their own gardens. You’ll be able to taste a variety of tomatoes to help tastiest tomatoes of 2026.This program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required but encouraged.

Making jam seems to be everyone’s favorite food preservation activity. But, it is not necessarily easy! Come learn the magic behind making sweet preserves and the basics of boiling water canning. If time allows there will also be a demonstration on how to make freezer jam. We will use USDA tested and approved techniques and recipes. Take home a jar! Class size is limited. Register by September 11th.

Seed saving is an ancient practice that has found new meaning and urgency as more people have come to appreciate the benefits to the health and well-being that gardening provides. The Otsego County Master Gardeners will be presenting "The Art and Science of Seed Saving" on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 123 Lake Street, Cooperstown.Participants will have a hands-on experience in the CCESO Demonstration Garden how to select seeds and tips for saving them for years to come. This program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required but encouraged.
