Poultry Pullorum Testing 2023 - Otsego County

ATTENTION POULTRY EXHIBITORS!

Pullorum Testing will be held for birds at least 4 months (16 weeks) old.

Chickens, turkeys, guinea fowl, peacocks, pheasants & quail are eligible.

(Pigeons and waterfowl are exempt from testing)

Birds obtained from an NPIP-certified hatchery/flock (or from a feed store) may exhibit with a copy of the NPIP certificate or receipt showing the NPIP information. These expire in one year.

This is a requirement to exhibit at the County and State Fairs.

Pullorum Questions and Answers:

Pullorum is caused by bacteria belonging to the Salmonella family

Transmission is direct egg transmission of hatched eggs

Carrier birds harbor the diseased germs in reproductive organs bird-to-bird contact

Testing is conducted by a small amount of blood obtained from the wing vein

All birds are identified with NYS leg bands

* Leg bands are for identification purposes only and may be left on indefinitely

However, they do not indicate their current negative status.

Partial flock testing: Testing only those birds that will be showing at the fair that year.

Required annually for showing at County fairs in NYS) *Leg bands do not indicate a current test*

**No more than 20 birds per family will be tested at a clinic.

Full flock testing: Testing up to 30 birds (or 25% of the flock) on the premises over 4

months of age. Required annually for showing and/or selling poultry out of state and

some poultry shows in NYS. A flock certificate from NPIP will be issued and is valid for one year at NYS County Fairs.  

*NYS is a participant in NPIP (National Poultry Improvement Program) and an annual full flock test is required to participate.
